After a guided tour of Ghent, you can dive into local culture by visiting the impressive Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) or the contemporary S.M.A.K. to admire exceptional art.
It’s worth exploring the majestic Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen) on your own to enjoy its panoramic views.
Don’t miss tasting local specialties in traditional breweries, like the Gruut local beer or the typical cuberdons (cone-shaped sweets).
For an authentic experience, take a boat ride along the canals, stroll through the picturesque Patershol neighborhood with its medieval alleys, or simply relax at a terrace in Vrijdagmarkt Square while watching daily life in this charming Flemish city.
Ghent is a Flemish city that offers a bit of everything: canals with medieval houses, art, great food, and a vibrant student atmosphere. It’s less touristy than Bruges, so it’s easier to stroll around.
A boat ride along the canals is a great way to start. Tours last about 40 minutes and pass through Graslei and Korenlei, where the most beautiful guild houses are. In good weather, the riverside terraces are full of people.
Saint Bavo’s Cathedral houses the famous Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers. This 15th-century polyptych has incredible detail. Entrance costs around €12, but it’s worth it. They now also offer a virtual reality experience.
The Ghent Jazz Festival takes place from July 4 to 19. Two weeks of concerts across the city, especially at Bijloke, mixing well-known artists with new bands. The atmosphere is fantastic.
The Gentse Feesten runs from July 18 to 27. During these ten days, the city turns into a giant street festival. There’s free music everywhere, street theater, and plenty of food and drink stalls. It’s a crazy but wonderful experience.
Gravensteen Castle is a medieval fortress in the middle of the city. It was once the residence of the Counts of Flanders and later a prison. You can climb its towers for great views, and the audioguide helps understand its history.
The Patershol neighborhood was once home to weavers. Its cobbled streets and brick houses are now filled with restaurants and cafés. It’s less touristy than the center and a great place to try local dishes like waterzooi, a traditional stew.
If you love beer, Ghent is the place for you. Dulle Griet is a famous bar with hundreds of Belgian beers. You’ll also find chocolate shops everywhere, with some excellent ones like Vandenbouhede or Luc Van Hoorebeke.
Saint Michael’s Bridge offers the best views of the city, especially at sunset when the lights come on. From there you can see the three medieval towers: Saint Nicholas, the Belfry, and the Cathedral. It’s the classic photo spot — and worth it.
