What we will do on the Free Tour of Pula
Pula, the jewel of Istria, offers a fascinating journey through time. Our walking tour begins in the heart of the city: the majestic Roman Amphitheater. Built in the 1st century AD, this coliseum is one of the best-preserved in the world. Did you know that in its basements there is a unique exhibition about olive oil production in ancient Rome?
We will continue towards the Arch of the Sergii, a triumphal monument from the 1st century BC. Few people know that, if you look closely, you can distinguish small Latin inscriptions revealing stories of the Sergii family.
Our historical tour will take us to the Roman Forum, where the Temple of Augustus is located. Did you know that during World War II, a bomb fell right next to the temple? We’ll tell you how this architectural treasure was saved.
A detour will lead us to Sergijevaca Street, locally known as "Artisans’ Street". Here, in small workshops, local artisans keep ancient techniques alive. Don’t miss the chance to see how batanas, traditional Istrian slippers, are made.
We reach the Twin Gate, one of the few remaining double Roman gates in the world. We’ll show you a well-kept secret in the ground near the gate that many tourists miss.
Our next stop is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Inside, look for the fish mosaic on the floor; according to local legend, stepping on this mosaic brings good luck.
The tour concludes at the Pula market, a bustling center of local activity. You’ll learn about "biska," a unique mistletoe brandy produced with a secret recipe passed down through generations.
Throughout the tour, observe the art nouveau buildings that dot the city, silent witnesses of the Austro-Hungarian Empire era. Many still retain their original imperial mailboxes.
This historical free tour will not only show you the main attractions of Pula, but also immerse you in its rich history and culture, revealing secrets known only to the locals. From the footprints of ancient Rome to the living traditions of Istria, our visit will show you the unique charm of Pula and its hidden stories.
